In the artist's own words: “I took this photo entirely for composition's sake. The background captures the feel of the French Alps, at least on the day we visited Chamonix: both close enough and far enough away to seem completely unreal. The figures on the rock were real enough, waving at me with cigarettes, but it honestly looked to me as though they were pasted into a painting."
