In the artist's own words: “The Swiss decided to not yet join the European Union. The four people on the picture, nevertheless, will be entering 'Europe' once they pass the door to France. Basel is a nice city located in Switzerland at the borderline to France and Germany - they don't have a door to Germany in the train station."
